Moreover, the covered dock area offers a sheltered environment for material handling, both indoors and outdoors. With 80 strategically positioned warehouse doors set back from the dock edge, the movement of goods is smooth and seamless. Additionally, a battery charging station with a gantry crane is on-site to facilitate battery exchange, ensuring uninterrupted operations.
The layout of the receiving and dispatch areas, yard, and vehicle parking is tailored to accommodate a wide range of vehicles, from 3.5 tonne box vans to curtain-sided superlinks. The warehouse layout of the distribution center is optimized for the seamless integration of all operations in a logical and efficient manner. Various racking formats, including wide aisle and narrow aisle configurations, can be implemented. The single-story warehouse offers a clear height of 13m to the underside of any haunch/lattice truss, with a column spacing of 32m allowing for easy subdivision to create dedicated offices and ablutions. Furthermore, the ground and first floor offices feature staff change rooms, showers, and a dedicated canteen for employees. The warehouse is equipped with FM2 special flat flooring for enhanced durability and functionality.
The inner perimeter wall is constructed using durable high-impact concrete, ensuring its strength and reliability. It is further reinforced with electrical fencing and a fence alarm system that seamlessly integrates with the CCTV system, enhancing the overall security measures. Guard towers strategically positioned within the inner perimeter wall provide an elevated vantage point for surveillance. Access to the site is tightly controlled through a vacuum area, which features two enclosed security gates equipped with booms. The entrance is additionally secured with spiked barriers. To ensure round-the-clock protection, armed security personnel are present on-site at all times, complemented by continuous CCTV surveillance. Moreover, the security system incorporates advanced biometrics and facial recognition technology for on-site access control, further enhancing the overall security measures.
The council has provided a 1000kVA power supply along with an 800kVA backup diesel generator. Currently, there is an ongoing installation of a solar PV system with integrated generator support. The sprinkler system in place meets the specifications of category 4 as per the ASIB 11th edition rules, and it has the capacity to accommodate rack sprinklers. Furthermore, a highly efficient aspirating smoke-detection system has been installed in the warehouse.
In 2022, the Green Building Council of South Africa honoured the facility with a 4-star Green Star certification.
