Soil is of a high standard sandy loam (Avalon, Westleigh and Glencoe) type with a clay content of around 12-15% which is ideal for the growing of cash crops. Depth varies according to the topography with an average of around 600mm-800 mm. The sowing lands in the immediate vicinity are rated a type "A" with a long-term average yield of 5,0 - 6,0 tons/ha on maize and 2,5 tons/ha on wheat which are above average. The area is of a mixed veld type comprising predominantly of sour veld grassland with a very high mix of sweeter grasses, such as "Red grass" and "Eragrostis cultivars.
