Celebrated in De Kat, Garden & Home, Be My Guest, Pretoria News, and featured on national television, Ellensgate is more than a property — it is a national showpiece.
Few homes can claim this level of cultural presence.
This is architecture with a heartbeat.
A Historic Jacaranda Haven
Dating back to circa 1915, this enchanting rondavel-style double-storey home was originally built by Jameson, Pretoria’s City Engineer and the visionary behind the city’s famed Jacarandas. A majestic Jacaranda planted on the property remains one of the oldest and largest in Pretoria, its canopy now intertwined with vibrant bougainvillea, captivating visitors each October.
Acquired in 1923 by Dr. Jack Holloway and his wife Tienie, a celebrated Afrikaans poet, the estate was lovingly named Ellensgate in memory of their eldest daughter, Ellen. Today, the current owners honor this legacy, preserving its charm, history, and timeless elegance.
In 1923, the upper storey was added, transforming the quaint cottage into a distinguished mansion. The property changed hands in 1953 to Mr. Brent, a government official, whose wife was a celebrated piano teacher, filling nearly every room with music. The Brent-Wessels family also contributed to South Africa’s cultural heritage, composing beloved traditional Afrikaans songs such as “Ken jy die land waar die Boerevolk woon”. A fire in the 1970s destroyed the original thatch roof, leaving the home in a precarious state.
By 1995, the property—almost a ruin and slated for demolition—was rescued by its current owners. With meticulous care, vision, and passion, Ellensgate was lovingly restored, reclaiming the grandeur and elegance of its early 20th-century glory.
This architectural language has not been replicated — it stands entirely alone.
Commissioned by Pretoria’s city engineer over a century ago, Ellensgate remains one of the most extraordinary Edwardian residences in the region. Its hand-cut blue slate walls, flowing slate pathways, crafted woodwork, and rare stained glass were significant enough to be formally recorded by the University of Pretoria.
An Address of Influence
Perfectly positioned in Upper Arcadia on a highly visible corner, the residence sits within moments of the U.S. Embassy, Eastwood Village, and Bryntirion Estate. Double-glazed windows, dual-access entrances, and discreet high-level security create an oasis of calm in one of Pretoria’s most strategic pockets.
Interiors with Story and Spirit
Once inside, the home reveals a world of timeless craftsmanship:
• beautifully preserved Oregon pine flooring
• a distinguished Herbert Baker fireplace built from Kirkness bricks
• bay windows that frame the gardens as living artworks
The layout combines elegance with practicality.
The ground-floor suite is ideal for guests or executive use, while the upper level offers four generous en-suite bedrooms — each with private dressing nooks — accessible via the sweeping staircase or matching outdoor steel stairways positioned with geometric symmetry.
Spaces Crafted for Celebration and Comfort
A charming farmhouse-inspired kitchen, fitted with a hob, dual ovens, pantry, and scullery, opens to verdant gardens.
The formal lounge greets guests with grandeur, and the impressive dining room is designed for refined hosting.
Outdoors, a dedicated entertainment pavilion — complete with its own kitchen — sets the stage for sophisticated gatherings, intimate celebrations, or executive retreats. Flagstone patios, tranquil gardens, and a sparkling pool create a serene backdrop.
Parking includes under-roof space for five vehicles, with capacity for many more inside the property.
