Heidelberg is a town in the Gauteng province of South Africa. It is situated on the banks of the River Nile, in the Heidelberg District, and is the seat of the local municipality. The town was founded in 1848 and named after the German city of Heidelberg. Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination, due to its history and its proximity to Johannesburg.
